Description
Launched in 2000, reference 116509 marked a pivotal moment in the history of the Cosmograph Daytona, as it introduced for the first time the in-house Rolex calibre 4130—developed internally after over a decade of research. Presented here in a precious 18-carat white gold configuration, this 2008 version perfectly blends the power of a racing chronograph with the refined elegance of noble metals.
Encircling the dial, the fixed bezel features a tachymetric scale engraved directly into the white gold. A hallmark of the Daytona since its inception, this function enables the calculation of average speed over a given distance. With markings up to 400 units per hour, it serves as a true performance instrument, directly inspired by the world of motorsport.
The dial of this model is one of its most striking and sought-after elements. Its deep black background is accented with vivid red details—railroad-style minute track, subdial surrounds, and central chronograph hand. These sporty touches recall the dashboard instruments of vintage race cars. Applied Arabic numerals in white gold and partially skeletonized baton hands are filled with luminous material, ensuring optimal legibility in low-light conditions. This configuration, nicknamed the “racing dial” by collectors, is relatively rare for this reference.
Reference 116509 houses the Rolex calibre 4130, an automatic chronograph movement developed entirely in-house. Equipped with a vertical clutch and column wheel, it delivers seamless chronograph activation and high precision. The movement offers a 72-hour power reserve and features the Parachrom blue hairspring—antimagnetic, shock-resistant, and exceptionally stable. As expected, the calibre is Superlative Chronometer certified, exceeding COSC standards.
Like all professional Oyster models, the Daytona 116509 is water-resistant to 100 metres, thanks to its screw-down Triplock crown and hermetically sealed caseback.
