Champagne Dial – Rolex Service 2017 – Rare Tachymeter Bezel (200 / Inverted 6)
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16523, introduced in 1988, represents a major turning point in the history of Rolex’s iconic chronograph. As the first automatic Daytona ever produced, it pairs the modified Zenith El Primero movement (Caliber 4030) with a modernized case design and improved water resistance.
This particular 1989 example, in steel and yellow gold (Rolesor) with a champagne dial, belongs to the very first production batches of the reference. It is fitted with an 18k yellow gold tachymeter bezel that features two unusual characteristics:
1. Unlike later Daytona generations whose bezels are graduated up to 400 units/hour, this one features a reduced tachymeter scale, topping out at 200. This configuration, exclusive to the earliest production years, reflects a specific calibration of the dial, tailored to more realistic speed measurements for automotive use at the time.
2. Another rare detail: the inverted “6” at the 60 position — appearing more like a “9”. This typographical error, found only on the earliest batches of the 16523 reference, has since become a coveted vintage hallmark and a highly collectible anomaly in the market.
This Daytona “200 Inverted 6” is in very good overall condition, with a light, even patina on both the dial and tritium lume. It received a full Rolex service in 2017, with supporting documentation provided.
